The cost of starting a marketing business

Why We Built Activ as a Franchise, Not an Agency

Why We Built Activ as a Franchise, Not Just Another Marketing Agency

Every marketing business starts the same way: one person, a client list, and a determination to make it work. Activ Marketing began there too, a spreadsheet doing the job of a proper system, and a founder holding the whole business together through sheer will. It’s a familiar story because it’s almost every marketer’s story. The trouble is, it’s not a business model. It’s a person absorbing all the risk of one.

Across the industry, that risk is starting to show. According to a 2026 survey by the specialist business insurer Markel Direct, 58% of self-employed workers report having experienced burnout, and 48% have seriously considered quitting their business altogether because of the pressure of being permanently “on.” Independence was supposed to be the reward for going it alone. For a lot of marketers, it’s turned into exposure instead.

The franchise advantage

We built Activ differently, and the industry data backs up why. The British Franchise Association’s 2024 survey found that 99.5% of UK franchises are commercially successful, compared with Experian’s widely cited figure that half of all new start-ups fail within three years. Franchising now contributes over £19 billion to the UK economy, up 12% since 2018. That gap has nothing to do with talent. It’s the difference between inventing a business model from scratch while also trying to run it, and stepping into one that already works.

That’s the model behind Activ today: a network of franchise partners, each running their own patch, built on Activ Flow, our own CRM, with Kora, our AI support, layered in to handle the busywork that used to eat up evenings.

Where structure earns its keep

Technology only helps if it’s built into the foundations rather than bolted on afterwards. Office for National Statistics data shows AI adoption among UK businesses has nearly tripled since 2023, yet only one in ten uses it extensively; most are still patching AI onto old ways of working rather than rebuilding around it. We took the opposite approach: Activ Flow and Kora exist to protect the parts of the job only a person can do, reading a client, shaping a strategy, making the judgement call that actually needs a human. They’re not there to replace it.

That’s also why we don’t run every territory identically. The temptation in any network is to standardise until there’s no room left for local judgement. We resist it. Every partner works from the same backbone, then brings their own read on their market, their clients, their community, because that local knowledge is exactly what head office can’t replicate from a distance.

Ready to stop carrying it alone?

If any of this sounds familiar (the spreadsheet, the late nights, the sense that growth is somehow making things harder rather than easier), it’s worth asking whether the business needs more hustle, or a different foundation altogether.

Our Activ Franchise programme, from Solo to Scale, is built for marketers who’ve already proven they can do the work, and are ready for the systems, support and network to do it without carrying all the risk alone.
